🦁 Top Safari Parks in Uganda
1. Queen Elizabeth National Park
Location: Southwestern Uganda, near Bwindi.
Highlights:
Tree-climbing lions in the Ishasha Sector.
Classic game drives across Kasenyi Plains.
Boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel (hippos, buffalo, elephants).
High bird diversity (600+ species).
Wildlife: Elephants, lions, leopards, buffalo, hippos, warthogs, antelope, crocodiles.
2. Murchison Falls National Park
Location: Northwestern Uganda.
Highlights:
Dramatic Murchison Falls where the Nile explodes through a narrow gorge.
Game drives on the northern bank.
Nile boat safari to the base of the falls (great for seeing elephants, crocs, and birds).
Wildlife: Giraffes, lions, elephants, leopards, buffalo, hippos, crocodiles, Jackson’s hartebeest.
3. Kidepo Valley National Park
Location: Remote northeast corner near South Sudan.
Highlights:
Uganda’s wildest, most untouched park—amazing scenery and seclusion.
Cultural visits with the Karamojong and Ik people.
Wildlife: Cheetahs, lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, ostriches, hyenas, and more.
Best for: Experienced travelers or those looking to get way off the beaten path.
4. Lake Mburo National Park
Location: Near Mbarara, southwest Uganda.
Highlights:
Easiest park to access from Kampala/Entebbe.
Best for walking safaris and biking/game viewing.
Wildlife: Zebras, impalas, elands, hippos, crocodiles, leopards (rarely seen).
No elephants or lions, making it great for low-key safaris or family-friendly visits.
5. Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary (not a full safari park, but important!)
Location: En route to Murchison Falls.
Highlight: Only place in Uganda to see wild rhinos (on foot).
Part of Uganda’s “Big Five” experience when combined with other parks.
🚙 Safari Logistics
Most parks offer guided game drives, but self-drives are also possible.
Best times: Dry seasons (June–August and December–February).
4×4 vehicles recommended year-round due to rough roads.
Night drives are available in some parks (especially Lake Mburo and Queen Elizabeth).
Combine with boat safaris for added variety.
